Home Assistant fails when the foundation is wrong

A half-finished HA install creates more frustration than no install: orphaned integrations, dashboards nobody opens, and remote access that is either broken or insecure.

  • Wrong hardware, fragile installs

SD-card Pi builds that die, under-spec VMs, or a HA Green never commissioned leave you rebuilding instead of automating.

    • Unstable storageUnstable storage
    • Guesswork hostingGuesswork hosting
    • No backupsNo backups
  • Integrations and cloud spaghetti

Devices stay stuck in vendor apps. Zigbee/Wi-Fi never join cleanly, so automations never get reliable entities.

    • App-only devicesApp-only devices
    • Radio chaosRadio chaos
    • Naming messNaming mess
  • Dashboards and remote access unfinished

HA is ‘installed’ but the family never uses it — and remote access is either missing or a security liability.

    • Empty dashboardsEmpty dashboards
    • No starter automationsNo starter automations

What a proper HA setup delivers

A local, supportable Home Assistant install your household can actually use — with clear next steps for growth.

  • Stable HA foundation

    • Right-sized hardware

HA Green, Pi, or VM chosen for reliability — not the cheapest YouTube tip.

    • Onboarded & backed up

Users, basics, and a backup habit so updates are not a gamble.

    Built to last

  • Devices that show up as entities

    • Shelly/Sonoff & friends

Core integrations joined and named so automations have clean targets.

    • Radio path planned

Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Matter path agreed — not bolted on as an afterthought.

    Integration-ready

  • Usable UI + safe remote path

    • Family dashboards

Rooms, lights, and scenes the household can open without training.

    • Remote access guidance

Secure options explained and configured to your comfort — not open ports by default.

    Ready for daily use

What's included

From hardware choice to handoff — a complete Home Assistant setup path.

  • Hardware & hosting choice

We recommend Home Assistant Green, a hardened Pi, or a VM based on your home size, radios, and reliability needs — then get the box online the right way.

  • HA install & onboarding

Fresh install or clean rebuild: supervisor/OS basics, users, network, backups, and a tidy starting config instead of years of DIY debris.

  • Integrations & naming

Bring Shelly, Sonoff, and other priority devices into HA with room-clear names and entities you can automate — not orphaned vendor apps.

  • Dashboards, basics & remote guidance

Usable Lovelace views, a few proving automations, and secure remote-access options explained so you are not stuck on the LAN forever.

How we set up Home Assistant

A clear Plan → Install HA → Integrate → Handoff path so the job stays documented and supportable.

  • Plan

Scope rooms, devices, radios, and goals. Choose Green / Pi / VM, agree what is in-scope vs later, and flag any electrical work that belongs under Product Installation.

  • Install HA

Commission or rebuild Home Assistant OS, network, users, and backups. Get a healthy core before chasing every integration under the sun.

  • Integrate

Connect priority Shelly/Sonoff and multi-protocol devices, name entities cleanly, and prove control from HA — local-first where the hardware allows.

  • Handoff

Dashboards the family can use, starter automations, remote-access guidance, and a short walkthrough so you know what was built and how to ask for help.

What this setup covers

Focused on a working Home Assistant core — not physical DB mounting (that is Product Installation) and not break/fix (that is Troubleshooting).

Dashboards that get used

Rooms, lights, scenes

Why Untamed Tech for Home Assistant

We stock HA-friendly gear and live in the same Shelly/Sonoff + Home Assistant stack we set up for you.

  • Other companies:

    • Generic IT / AV installer

Knows networks — often leaves HA YAML, Zigbee, and Shelly as your homework.

    • DIY forum marathon

Free until the SD card dies, entities are nonsense, and remote access is a security hole.

    • Cloud-only smart-home shop

Happy in vendor apps — local HA control never becomes the brain.

Home Assistant Setup FAQs

Straight answers before we book the setup.

Is this the same as Product Installation?

No. Product Installation is physical mounting and wiring of devices. Home Assistant Setup is commissioning the HA brain, integrations, dashboards, and basic automations — we can schedule both when you need hardware on the wall and HA configured.

Which hardware do you recommend?

Home Assistant Green for most homes that want appliance-simple reliability; Yellow when you want onboard radios; a hardened Pi or VM when that fits your stack. We choose with you during Plan — not from a random forum thread.

Can you rebuild a messy existing HA?

Yes. Advanced and Standard packages can include a clean rebuild: export what is worth keeping, reinstall cleanly, and re-integrate priority devices so you are not fighting years of DIY debt.

Do you cover secure remote access?

We guide and configure sensible options (e.g. Nabu Casa or other secure approaches you prefer). We do not leave open port-forwards as the default ‘solution’.

Do you only work with Shelly and Sonoff?

Those are our staples and what we stock, but HA Setup also covers other common integrations where they fit. Priority is a stable local stack we can support in Gauteng.

What should I prepare before the visit?

Network access (admin Wi-Fi or Ethernet), a decision on Green/Yellow/Pi/VM if not buying through us, a list of must-have devices/rooms, and whether remote access is required on day one.
